California is one of USA’s 50 states. It is located on the west coast. The Pacific Ocean is one of the neighbors, like Mexico and the states Nevada, Oregon and Arizona. The biggest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. The capital is Sacramento. Actually Los Angeles is the county who has the most inhabitants in all of USA. California is divided into 58 county, every counties are responsible for their own polis within and local court. California becomes a state of America 9.septeber.1850. It was a part of Mexico before it became a part of USA.

The name:

The name California from the novel “Las Serga River de Esplandiàn” by Garcìa Ordòñez, it is a designation for an imaginary island, an earthly paradise. The novel was published in 1510.

History:

The coast of California was discovered by the Spanish man Cabrillo, in 1542.

Not until the middle of the century the Spanish took California in possession, while they had settled down on Baja California, the peninsula south of California in 1697. Spanish Franciscans founded a number of mission stations in the area to convert the Indian population.

The Spanish were the first to arrive in California after the Native Americans. The Indians in California were split in many tribes. The contact with the white people had reduced the number of Indians from 310.000 to 250.000.

Mexico claimed the area of the country’s liberation in 1821. The area was characterized by foreign influence from mainly Russians, British and primarily Americans. And in 1846 the USA declared war against Mexico and California was formally ceded by Mexico in 1848.

In 1850, California became a member of the Union as the 31st state.

Under the civil war California joined the northern states in the 19 century California experienced a strong growth, during the great depression in 1930s .

Russia had some small settlements for the purpose of whaling and fur trapping in Northern California, but Russia didn't attempt to colonize the area except in very isolated areas.

For almost 500 years ago the fight for California began. Queen sent Sir Francis Drake to harass and raid the Spanish galleons. England was also starting to realize the value of California.

Spain was claiming many lands in the new world, and England didn’t want Spain to claim more lands, when they felt this would upset the balance of power between the two super powers at that time. The tension was high enough between England and Spain already.

But there was not enough Spaniards willing to leave Spain for the New World, and Spania attempts to convert the Indians into Spaniards was failing. The settlers in New Spain, which would soon become Mexico, were beginning to pose a problem to the Spanish as well. There was made some of the same errors that the English had made with the c that Spain had made. Spain forbade New Spain from trading with any other l beside them, and Spanish settlers who were born in Spain were considered to be a higher class than pure Spanish born in New Spain. Even though New Spain had adopted the culture of Spain, the Spanish restrictions would soon drive Spain from the New World just as the English had been driven out

The rich Central Valley eventually became known as the breadbasket of the world. California offered a lot to the nation. California allowed for year-round farming and fruits and vegetables could be grown in California that would grow in very few other places because of California's mild climate.

Climate:

Most of California has rainy winters and dry summers. It’s more rain and fog near the cost. It is dryer and colder winters further inlands and hotter summers. The hottest temperature in California ever is 57 °C. That was taken 10 July 1913.
